Spicing Things Up! Using Foodways to Engage Students

FREE Professional Development for Educators

Sessions will include the following:

  1. Reaching Students with Foodways Narratives to consider matters of class, race, gender, labor, etc.;
  2. Creative Reuse of Food, Art, and Cookbooks using altered books for journaling and documentation;
  3. Teaching Native American Influences on Southern Foodways;
  4. Creating Foodways Inspired Spoken Word Poems, Exploring Foodways Contributions of the Enslaved;
  5. Louisiana Voices: Interviewing about Foodways;
  6. We Write What We Eat Exploring the Role of Foodways in the Writings of Ernest Gaines; 
  7. The Biology of Cajun Food Dissecting Cajun dishes to learn about plants, animals, taste, digestion and nutrition.

All participants receive a resource folder, participate in hands on activities and create a project to take home.

This foodways workshop is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts Folk and Traditional Arts Program and is part of an on-going folklife education initiative supported by the Vermilionville Living History Museum Foundation and the Local Learning Network to deepen Vermilionville's ties to local educators and students through enhanced appreciation of folklife.
