VITA Adult Education Tutor Training

Train to be an adult literacy, ESL, or high school equivalency tutor with VITA and help an adult learner achieve their dreams!

Improved educational opportunities for adults strengthen the whole community.  A better-educated workforce is appealing to out-of-town businesses looking for new headquarters. Higher education means less crime and more civic engagement. The children of better-educated adults have vastly improved educational outcomes. The benefits are endless.

But education is more than just statistics. When people learn -- real people, with names and stories -- whole worlds of possibility open for them. Would you like to join an adult learner on their journey?

VITA, an Acadiana non-profit that's been operating since 1982, invites you to become a volunteer adult education tutor. Tutors work one-to-one with adult students to learn to read and write for the first time, learn English as a Second Language, or study for their high school equivalency test.

We need tutors across all subject areas, with math tutors being particularly in demand, but no previous teaching experience or specialty education is required. If you can read and write, you can teach someone else to read and write.

Join us for a two-night training workshop in which you'll become familiar with our programs, our teaching methods, and our curriculum, and gain some insight into the personal aspects of working with adult learners -- our neighbors!

The five-hour training is mandatory for new tutors, so please be sure to clear the evenings of both June 6 and 13. We look forward to meeting you!
