Just Listen-How Listening Can Prevent Suicide
Crouch Foundation and Volunteers of America
Suicide, a devastating act that is preventable! More people die by suicide in the United States than are murdered each year. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death of Americans. In 2014, the highest suicide rate was among people 45 to 64 years old with the second highest rate occurring in those 85 years and older. In 2014, someone in the United States died by suicide every 12.8 minutes leaving behind the survivors who must learn to live after losing someone to suicide.
The statistics in Lafayette Parish alone are staggering. Statistics from Lafayette Parish Public High School Students show that in 2014:
- 31.8% of students experienced depression
- 18.6% considered suicide
- 9.3% attempted suicide
