According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), there’s approximately $42 billion in unclaimed funds in the United States. How does this happen? Well, people move, get married and pass away, causing financial institutions and companies to lose track of customers. When they can’t reach people to return refunds, overpayments and unredeemed money; it is turned over to the state’s treasury where it sits until someone claims it. Most claims are not time sensitive and are typically available to heirs.
