May 31, 2018 01:43PM ● By Staff Writer
Registration is now open for Camp Brave Hearts for children ages 6-11. The 2-day summer camp is August 2nd and 3rd for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Robicheaux Center, and is open to the public. Last day to register is June 29th. To register please contact Heather Prejean, LCSW at (337) 232-1234 or [email protected].

“Some of the benefits of attending camp are learning how to appropriately express feelings with others who have similar losses and gaining new coping techniques to better understand the social changes that often come from the death of a special person,” said Heather Prejean, LCSW, Director of Hospice of Acadiana’s Center for Loss & Transition.

Camp Brave Hearts is staffed by counselors, social workers, nurses, and trained volunteers experienced in hospice and/or bereavement care. Through guided activities, children can increase levels of openness and trust; improve self-confidence; and form relationships with other children who are in a similar situation.

Mary Bergeron, Hospice of Acadiana’s Director of Community Outreach explained, “Camp Brave Hearts is a great place for kids to be kids – even those who are grieving. They will learn ways to navigate through their feelings - and they’ll have some fun while they’re at it!”

Hospice of Acadiana, established in 1983, is Louisiana’s oldest hospice and palliative care provider, and the only non-profit provider in Acadiana. As a non-profit provider, patients receive all of the care they need, regardless of the cost or their ability to pay. HOA also offers several programs and services to the community at-large free of charge, including: Grief Counseling, Loss and Transition Workshops, Camp Brave Hearts, Pet Peace of Mind, and the “We Honor Veterans” Program.
